<g:plusone href="http://www.themovingplanner.com/real-estate/tips-for-a-successful-overseas-move"></g:plusone>
Whether you’re moving overseas permanently or for a temporary period of time one of the biggest headaches is organizing your belongings. Naturally, you would like the furniture or personal effects you own to arrive at your destination in one piece. There are a few simple rules you can follow that can help to do this.

Step One: What’s being moved and what is being left behind

Whether you’re moving overseas permanently or short-term, the first step you need to take is to go through everything you own and decide what to keep and what to get rid of. It is important that you do this before you arrange for the moving company to come in and make a quote. If there are items you will use up to the last minute but will not take with you, mark them clearly, so your moving consultant knows not to include them in the space requirements or quotation.

The next stage depends on whether you are moving permanently or on a temporary basis. Temporary moves may mean that you can leave items behind in self storage facilities. However, it is always important to consider what items are time-relevant i.e. if you’re storing your children’s toys and they will be three years older when you return, it’s not really worth the expense of storing these items.

Permanent moves will require a good hard look at what you own, love and don’t really need anymore. You can save yourself hundreds if not thousands of dollars by taking a realistic approach when sorting through your belongings. After a few overseas moves and quite some domestic I take the approach that if it’s not sentimental and I haven’t used it for more than two years – it’s time to say goodbye.

When deciding on what to take with you, you will need to get a good idea of the type of accommodation that will be available to you in your destination country. You may be leaving a house with good square footage to move into a much smaller apartment. In Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and parts of the Middle East accommodation rates are at a premium and you may not have the budget to acquire the same space you have now.

If you need to leave some of your furniture and belongings behind, or want to store your belongings while you work out the logistics in your new country – try self storage units and facilities. Your moving company may have this service available or you may find a reasonably priced local self storage company who can help you with your requirements.

Lastly, take the time to research the customs website of your destination country. Some may have restrictions or warnings about the types of goods that will require inspection (adding costs) and possibly fumigation. For example, if you are taking plastic containers overseas and also have a large amount of wooden furnishings you may be subject to fumigation at the receiving port. Plastic absorbs the chemicals from the fumigation and will not be suitable to hold any future food products.

Step Two: Logistics of your move overseas

You will need to engage a moving company; your best option is to work with one that can also arrange for customs clearance and delivery at your destination. Many companies have overseas affiliates or subsidiaries making the transition of your belongings less impeded.

Work with a company who has experience with your destination country, each country has their own customs regulations and you need someone who can advise you from experience. Also ask if they can arrange the insurance for your belongings.

The next stage will be to have an agent from the moving company come in and assess the space you will require i.e. part of, full use of either a 20ft or 40ft container. For smaller loads, usually the moving company can arrange for your goods to share a container with someone else who has space – saving you money.

For both insurance and documentary purposes you will need to prepare a full inventory of all the belongings you are moving. This comes down to counting how many CD’s, DVD’s, books etc you own. Along with the quantities you will also need to assess the value of each of these items so that you can ensure the insurance will cover the worst case scenario.

Note that fridges and freezes are not recommended to be moved overseas. Electrical items may not be insured, especially the more fragile items such as TV’s and stereo systems. Check with your insurer and your moving company.

During your inventory process, it is a good time to decide whether you need to airfreight any items for immediate use, pack certain more valuable and fragile items in your suitcases or take another serious look at just how much stuff you’re keeping. Remember also that you can use the option to use a self storage unit or keep belongings with family and friends (who don’t mind looking after them).

Step Three: Moving day

Warning never take logic for granted! You will not be able to move food overseas so ensure that you have already removed all of these types of items before the packers arrive. Secondly, check your house and ensure that all teapots, coffeepots, jugs, plant pots etc are all empty of their contents. It has been known for packers to pack these items complete with liquid and contents inside.

Mark clearly any items that you do not want to be packed or even better move them all to one room, garage or location with a sign saying that they are not to be packed.

If you are allowed to pack your belongings you will need to ensure that the packing meets shipping standards. A handy tip is to mark the boxes with the type of destination room you want them to go in, i.e. study, “tommys room”, storage etc. When you’re ready to receive your belongings at the other end post signs on the doors of the receiving rooms i.e. study, “tommy’s room”, storage.

Items such as towels, blankets and sheets make great padding and protection for more fragile belongings. If you are doing the packing you can follow a simple rule – heaviest items on the bottom, most fragile on the top with a good thickness of padding between the sides, bottom and top of the boxes. Lastly, remember that a person at some stage is going to carry the boxes – 40kg of books in one box is not advisable!

With some planning, logical and preparation your move overseas can be made a lot simpler. There will be so many logistical items you will be working on to make the move, so it’s important you contract a moving company that can remove as many headaches as possible.

The idea of creating a whole new life in an exciting new location can be a dream come true. By researching online you can learn a lot about your new country, from local customs and traditions to the best restaurants and shopping areas in the neighborhood you’re moving to. There are many message boards and websites available for expatriates. The word “expatriate” has taken on an entirely new meaning in today’s global economy. An expatriate isn’t someone who has turned his back on his home country, but simply someone who is living overseas. There are Australian expatriate groups all over the world. People keep in contact with expatriate, or “expat”, groups in order to ask or give advice on how to adjust to life in the other country, learn about local laws and customs, or even learn which Australia-based companies have the best shipping rates when getting products shipped from home.

For some people, the excitement of moving overseas can come to a screeching halt when you start trying to figure out how you’re going to pack up the life you’ve built here, and move it to an entirely different country. But it isn’t as complicated as it may seem.

For the smoothest moving experience possible, it’s best to hire a removalist company to pack your home for you. A professional removalist company knows how to pack delicate, breakable and expensive items for air transport or for a long ocean voyage. The removalist company will be able to work with you to decide which items or how many shipping containers you want sent to your new home via air transport, and which items can take longer to ship or can’t be sent at a reasonable cost on an airplane. They will also be able to tell you about potentially flammable or corrosive items that you may not think of that can’t legally be transported by a removalist company overseas, such as batteries, garden and household chemicals and even some beauty products such as nail polish remover and aerosol containers.

Be sure you understand the customs information and procedures for your destination country in order to ensure that your items aren’t held up in customs when they arrive. Make sure all of the necessary forms are filled out, given to the proper people at the proper time and you have additional copies of everything just in case something is misplaced along the way. Be sure also that you have insured your items for an adequate amount in case something is damaged.

When your shipping containers arrive in your new country, they will be transported by railroad and/or truck to your new home, where the crates are opened and the boxes moved into your home. Be sure to examine your belongings for breakage or damage as soon as possible after they arrive so that any necessary insurance claims can be made in a timely manner.

Once you have gotten your belongings moved to your new country, you can begin enjoying your new home and all of the unique experiences you will have overseas.

<g:plusone href="http://www.themovingplanner.com/long-distance-moving/international-moving-companies"></g:plusone>
Relocating your house invariably involves an intensive amount of planning and preparation, from packaging to loading goods to unloading and resettling. Moving overseas however is a different ball game altogether. There are crucial decisions to be made regarding what to move to your new home. It helps if you have a floor plan of the new location which would help you determine and eliminate the surplus material. In the absence of the floor plan however its important to make sure that you let go of stuff that is not absolutely essential. It is advisable to not ship important documents (like birth certificates, marriage certificates, family documents etc) fire arms, aerosol cans, open bottles containing liquids, live plants and other perishable items.

The two available options- either contact a moving company (there are companies like Intlmove which specialize in relocating residences overseas, and take on their hands all procedures right from packing to resettling. But they require you to contact them about three months before the move is due) or do it yourself. If you decide to do the packing yourself there are some pointers that might come in handy- for bulky or heavy items like books use small boxes, secure carefully the bottoms of the boxes, never pack over the edge of the container, fit items inside one another (especially kitchen ware and utensils), breakable items should be packed individually between layers of paper, wrap rugs and carpets in plastic rolls, remove fuel from power gear and when possible wrap them in their original packing.

Moving overseas is a complicated process and can be rife with unforeseen obstacles, ‘be prepared’ for anything. Insurance is available to cover any kind of damage to your personal belongings, right from the time they are picked up from your house till they are dropped to your new home. You can pick from two options, according to your specific needs- 1. All risk insurance, which covers your goods for any and every kind of damage which might happen on the way 2.

Total loss insurance can be claimed if and only if all your goods are lost or damaged. In either case you are required to prepare a ‘declared value’ inventory which lists the costs and replacement value for all your goods. All risk insurance, its important to know, is not available for household goods packed by the owner. If All risk insurance is to be claimed, more often than not, the involvement of a moving company is mandatory.

Your vehicles can be shipped in two different ways: RO/RO (roll on/roll off) or an exclusive container. In the prior, the vehicle is driven to the port, loaded in a protective compartment and then driven off from the port of destination while in the latter the automobile stays inside the container at all times. You also have the option of packing goods with the car, in the container. Shipping costs are based on the total volume or weight of your belongings. The transportation costs can be considerably reduced if you avail of the ‘door to port’ option, especially if you are familiar with the place you are going to. It is advisable that you should be present personally when your shipment arrives. But in case that is not possible, it is crucial to make an adult representative available.

Moving overseas, across international borders can be made a pleasurable and hassle free process with the use of a little foresight and careful planning.

Hard to believe, but another four years have passed and it’s Olympics time again. For us viewers it seems to come around in the blink of an eye. There’ll be a few weeks’ feverish excitement as the competitions are run, the medals awarded and the hauls tallied, and then we’ll go back to our everyday lives.

How different it must be for those taking part. As a spectator, when you see the athletes competing – not just those waving from the podium as they accept their medals, but everyone who participates – you think only of that moment, their time in the sun. It is all too easy though to forget that this is the culmination of months and years of training, an unpublicized and unglamorous dedication to their sport that they must reaffirm on a daily basis.

In this sense it struck me that their Olympic effort is analogous to the issue of moving abroad.

How many times have you read an article or watched a program on TV, seen a family splashing around in their pool or kicking back on the sun-drenched terrace, and thought ‘lucky blighter, that’s the life’?

Indeed. But it didn’t happen by magic. Moving abroad takes resolve, a single-minded commitment to change your life.

Often it means leaving a job/career. Even if you have to leave your current position, taking the step to hand in your notice and leave it all behind can be surprisingly difficult.

You may have to sell a house you’ve lived in for years, to which you’ve devoted much time and energy.

If you need visas or work permits it may take a considerable amount of time-consuming – and often expensive – form-filling to get all your documents in order … time that might otherwise be spent more pleasurably in front of the TV or out with friends.

There can be miles of red tape to wade through. And often it involves dealing with an unfamiliar bureaucracy, a different legal system, and may be in a different language.

You may have to scout around trying to find a new home, applying for new jobs, sorting new schools, organizing packing and shipping of your belongings, making arrangements for the family pets.

Even the simplest move becomes a logistical headache.

Then there’s the heart wrench of saying goodbye to family and friends to consider.

And that’s just before you go.

When you arrive you’ve got the hassles of moving into your new accommodation, setting up bank accounts, registering with the local tax authorities, organizing health-care, getting your kids (if you have them) into school.

What’s more, you’re now in a foreign land, with most, if not all, your family and old friends back in your home country. So you’ve got to set about making a whole new social circle if you’re not to end up isolated. You might have to learn a new language to boot.

In other words, it ain’t easy. Moving overseas involves a considerable amount of expense, stress, time and effort to end up some place where – at least to begin with – you’re likely to feel out of your depth and wondering if you’ve made the right decision.

But such is life. Anything worthwhile takes effort. And oftentimes the more the effort, the more worthwhile it eventually proves.

Think back to those Olympic athletes, with their 5 a.m. starts and the interminable hours spent in the dark and cold training. I’ll bet every one of them – even those that end up last in their event – will tell you all the effort was worth it to have finally got there. That sense of achievement will be with them always, however successful their competition turns out to be.

After Your Move

Unpack logically working down from essential to non-essential items. Reassemble your furniture when you have time. Don’t worry about filling wardrobes immediately if you have hired/bought special wardrobe boxes. They can hang perfectly well in there until you have time to put them away properly.

Get all of your major appliances ready for use again and hook them up.

Unpack all electrical items as quickly as possible and check for damage – you may have a limited window for insurance claims.

Register to vote and for any other local government purposes.

Check your mail is being forwarded to your new address.

Register with a doctor, dentist, veterinarian etc.

If necessary change your driver’s license and car details etc.
