My Long Distance Move

long-distance-moversIt was a cold winter this past year….. these Canadian winters make life a lttle harder especially when you wanna move. Ihad a lot on my mind that week. My long distance move was planned out to be exactly a month from today. Just thinking about it killed my entire day, I just wanted to break down and cry. It was just too much to do in such a short period of time. I didnt know where to start. After some thinking I decided to call up one of my buddies. We spoke a little, chilled and had a good time…. After a few brainstorming minutes he stopped talking for a minute and said i think I got the perfect solution for you. We looked online for a moving company that will help the person moving get everything set up,before the move and after. We looked for a company that helped you plan your move from the first step of a regular move to the most complicated steps of the relocation. We were on the task for about ten minutes till I found one. We called up the company and their services seemed to be good and by that night I had my entire move plan set and ready to go. It was litteraly the happiest  night in a while. Thanx Flatrate Moving. U guys are awesome.

Let’ really talk about moving? This is the biggest scam going in America. I moved from Los Angeles, California to Houston, Texas. I knew I had to do my homework so that I wouldn’t get scammed. So I started with the yellow pages and called several moving companies to get some quotes. There quotes seemed high so I called a local company that I had used several times before. This is where the nightmare begins?

I called this company and let them know where I was moving from and to. They said, “No problem”. The quote was 1,435. This sound great to me. I was working on a budget and I had just gotten married so my funds were low. I had even considered packing everything myself, with 2 kids and a cat so I called several rental truck companies and there prices were even higher. So lets go with my old faithful company that I had used before. I gave the company a call back and they gave me the same quote each time. Everyone I talked to said, ” That price is really low?” And are you sure that is the quote? “YES”, that is the quote.

I was happy about the quote because I did not have to borrow from my family or friends just so I could start my new life with my husband who was working already in Texas. Well let’s get to moving?
It is moving Day! I had pack as much as I could so that the move would be smooth. My mom had come over to do the finally packing with me and to be there with me and the children. The movers had arrived and where ready to go. They gave me all of this paper work to sign. They explained, everything they where going to do? Here comes the nightmare!

Yes, they were a local company and they would not be the ones bring my things out to Texas. They were there to pack everything in boxes because you cannot have anything loose in the long distance move. First part of the nightmare because I did not have enough boxes for this but they were ready and willing to box and charge per box used. Then you had to sign before they started to box anything. They estimated how much this move would cost? Remember, I already had my quote? The new quote was 5,164.34. I had a 2 bedroom house and a garage that needed to go.
After my mother and I passed out on the floor from the new quote, we had to make a decision. I was due to move into my home that weekend and my things were supposed to meet me there. Good ole mom, said,”Do what you have to do”. We signed the agreement. A 4,000. plus difference. What a way to start a new life. And it get better! My thing would be on a truck with someone else things. I would be sharing my truck with two other households. I wanted to know are they sharing the cost! And the nightmare continues.

Now, that I know my things are going to be sharing a ride, my next question was when will my things arrive? My mom was told we had to pay the 1,435.00, first and they would pack and bring my things to me. But there was a catch to even this. We had to pay the remaining balance just to have everything delivered. And until we did that, my things would be sitting in a storage. Can some one say nightmare!
I arrived in Texas with no clothes, 2 kids and no house but that’s another story. My mom paid the balance and my things still did not come on time because the company did not schedule my things to go but they took my mom credit card. They broke a window in the house I was moving from and took forever to pay that. My things took almost 2 weeks before I received them. I received no discount, no apology, no nothing for my nightmare!
My finally thoughts would be. If you are considering moving locally or at a distances, remember nothing is free and everything in America cost. And a scam can happen even when you do your homework? And i still owe mom a year later.

True, true indeed. But I guess we really have to pay some extra emphasis on moving companies who turn out to be fraudulent and would only get your money leaving you in dismay and very unsatisfied. To avoid these scams, visit http://www.movingguide.com.
