with lost, damaged and stolen items, and hidden outrageous charges. I am so scared now. Does anyone have a company for me to avoid or one with a good track record for a long distance move?
- Check the fine print.
- Find moving company with reputaion
- I hired a so called reputable moving co. which we thought we had an eye on at all times as we packed the boxes, were there w/ them throughout the load and unload and my husband drove his vehicle in front of the moving truck and I behind. If they stopped, we stopped. Still they stole our daughters….
- Pack the items yourself and label them as to what room they go into instead of the contents so they don’t know what is valuable

I hired a so called reputable moving co. which we thought we had an eye on at all times as we packed the boxes, were there w/ them throughout the load and unload and my husband drove his vehicle in front of the moving truck and I behind. If they stopped, we stopped. Still they stole our daughters rather expensive, brand new scooter which they must have hidden under all the moving blankets, We saw it go on there, and it never made it to our new home. By the time we realized it it was then our word against theirs. They denied it. They also denied putting a huge rip in our couch, and as for putting in a claim for all the broken items, I couldn’t spend the amount of time, effort and stress it takes to get that done, so I let it go. My mom just recently hired the most reputable long standing co. in Calif. and also got screwed, only she’s not willing to let it go, she’s been fighting that company for 3 mos. now still not resolved. I’m sure there are decent, problem free movers out there, but when we make our long distance move here in the next 6 mos. we are moving ourselves, as inconvenient as that sounds, were just not willing to risk it again! Best of luck to you…
Pack the items yourself and label them as to what room they go into instead of the contents so they don’t know what is valuable. Get free boxes at Walmart at 7:15 AM-they put them in the aisles while they are unpacking. Make a list of everything and its contents for yourself and number all of the boxes so you can see right away if a box is missing. I am Jewish, but stay away from the Israeli moving companies, I have heard stories about some of them and had a terrible experience myself. I do best with the long time Irish companies owned by a family. Why don’t you follow up on this question by telling people where you live and ask for a good company there? I know a wonderful company in Boston and another one in Tampa.
Do your research, we had a bad experience with a moving company, what was suppose to be a not to exceed amount exceeded by $5000 or they wouldn’t unload our belongings. I think they are a rip off. You can rent a Penske truck and do it yourself and save mega bucks. We just moved from Indiana to Tennessee two years ago. We have some friends that moved down last October, our move was over $10,000 their move with two Penske trucks $1400 plus the fuel for the trucks, big difference!
