what are some of the best rates for moving companies?
i got a rate of $00.49 per lb for 2268 lbs. for $1328.83. including taxes delivery and loading the truck. from my apartment to our house in oregon is this a good rate? i went through authorized movers, is there another company that offers a better quote or deal, also the move is from San Diego California to Portland Oregon if that makes a difference. My friends are moving cross country from Manhattan (NYC) to Los Angeles. Does anyone have first hand experience with a moving company? If you did not move from the 5 boroughs, please do not respond.
Also, my sister is moving across country for a year during her husband’s deployment. We are leaving most of our items in storage and anything I am taking will be taken in the car.
However, I would like to bring my elliptical machine if I can get it shipped. I am not sure who will do this, and I do not want to rent a truck and do it myself, I would like them to pick it up and move it for me.
Does anyone know of any moving or transportation companies that may do this? Or even if it can be done via mail?

On interstate moves what you care about is the fixed charges (packing) and the rate. Ignore the weight estimates since they are nothing more than guesses. The truck will be weighted empty and with your goods on board. The difference (the actual weight of your goods) will determine how much you are charged.
If you get estimates from a few different moving companies and one comes up with a low estimate based on using a lower weight than the others you should be suspicious of that estimate — and the company.

• Whether you do the actual boxing-up yourself?
• How accessible your house is?
• How far away your new home is?
• Whether you will require storage for any period of time?
