Happy Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day
As we transition this long and cold winter from New Years Day to Valentine’s Day, we shouldn’t forget some of the smaller ‘holidays’ that fall in between. Sure, we don’t get a day off from work, and there’s no special meals or culinary treats to mark such events, but some of them are, nonetheless, interesting. One of the least known of these days is-honest- ‘Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day’! It’s coming soon, and falls this year on the 31th; the “event” is always on the last Monday in January.
When partaking in moving and storage, be sure that your items are properly cushioned.
Just about everyone, it seems, from kids to octogenarians, enjoy crunching those sheets with little plastic-embedded bubbles inside them. They snap, crackle and pop, and make for a great tensional outlet. Yet, the invention of bubble wrap some fifty years ago, in 1960, has proven to be an essential weapon in the current arsenal of moving supplies.
Created, and still made by the Sealed Air Corp., the stuff was first used to protect IBM computers during shipment from the factory to offices everywhere. Since that time, bubble wrap has helped safeguard a variety of fragile and delicate items from being broken, or damaged, during a home or office move. In fact, the company estimates that they sell, on an annual basis, enough bubble wrap to stretch from the earth to the moon. That’s a whole lot of protection, for a whole lot of glass frames, mirrors, dishes, ceramic statues, and just about anything else that you may want to provide extra care for, while moving.
So, let’s take a moment to pay homage to that humble invention, bubble wrap, which provides protection for our delicate items when moving, as well as for the fun of snapping those little bubbles afterwords!
