Moving? Downsizing? Tips to Make it Work

If you are contemplating a move to a smaller home or apartment, you are probably facing the task of whittling down your belongings so that they will fit comfortably into the new space. The process of going through your home and deciding what to keep and what to get rid of can be emotionally difficult as well as physically demanding. Give yourself plenty of time to go through everything and think about it carefully. Remember that downsizing is not about throwing away memories, it is about simplifying your life. These tips can make the process easier so that you can get through the downsizing process successfully.

Begin in Rooms You Don’t Use Often

Most people spend the majority of their time in one or two rooms of their homes. When you begin downsizing, start by looking at items that are kept in rooms that you don’t use often. Dig to the back of closets and look through cabinets that are hard to reach. Most of the items that you will find in these out of the way places are things that you have not used in a long time. If you haven’t used it for more than three years, you will probably not miss it when it is gone.

Ask for Outside Advice

You can probably think of a story that goes with every item that you own. If you approach downsizing alone, you may have a hard time getting rid of anything because you can easily convince yourself that each item is important. Find a friend or family member that you trust to help you with the task. Schedule an afternoon or evening when you can get together and go through your closets and rooms to decide what is worth keeping and what is really impractical. An objective person who cares about you will be able to help you let go of things that you really don’t need anymore.

Be Prepared to Remove Items Immediately

Make sure you have all of the supplies ready before you begin selecting items to keep, sell, give away, or throw out. Prepare boxes or bags for each destination so that you can fill them as you decide on each item. When you are finished, seal up the bags or boxes and deliver them the same day. Schedule a delivery pickup from a local charity on the day you plan to do the most work. The longer the items stay at your home, the more tempting it will be to go through them again and keep some things. Once you decide something should go, make sure it goes away as soon as possible.
