Get a Promotion? Tips to Move from Desk to Desk
The easiest way to pop your bubble of bliss over your promotion is to be reminded that you need to move offices. Quite honestly, it is not that much easier to move from one desk to another in the same building than it is to completely relocate. There is still a lot of work involved and chances are good that you have new responsibilities piling up. This means that you don’t have time to slack; as if you would.
Clean the New Space
In a perfect world, the person moving out of your new office would leave it clean when they leave. This rarely happens. Going through and doing a quick power clean allows you to start with a clean slate. There is nothing worse than carrying everything there only to find out the drawers are still filled with unnecessary papers and the chair is broken.
Go through and throw away the trash and recycle the paper stuff. Then, use some type of cleaning solution, preferably one with a disinfectant to wipe everything down from the phone to the drawer handles to the arms of the chair.
Make a Checklist
This is an exciting time for you, and chances are good that you will be continuously interrupted to be congratulated. This means that your concentration will be broken and things will be forgotten. The easiest way to ensure a smooth move is to create an office checklist.
Now, depending on your promotion and new office, this list could be as simple as remembering to grab everything out of the filing cabinet and having new business cards made, or it could include a long list of intricate tasks like calling for a new fax line, having your name put on the door and measuring for furniture. As you complete each task, scratch it off so you are able to recognize what needs to be done at a quick glance.
Organized Packing
Fair enough, you have a ton of work to get to so you may be very tempted to just load everything in boxes and say you will deal with it all later. You won’t! If you think you will have time to sort through papers and organize cabinets at a later time, you are being delusional. Not to mention, how time-efficient will it be when you are forced to dig through the boxes to find that one piece of paper you jotted important notes on?
It may take a little extra time to go through everything and pack in an organized way, but you will happy you did. Not to mention, it will be much easier to unpack because everything will be in some type of order.
Labels are Your Friend
Don’t underestimate how helpful labels can be. Even if you only have a few boxes, you can label the folders or envelopes inside. This way, if you do need to locate something quickly during the move, you don’t have to waste valuable time looking for it.
Labels should also be used to mark any computers, printers, fax machines, etc. It will be easier to put everything back together, if you can simply match back up the corresponding labels.
