How to Beat the Relocation Blues
Moving to another area can be tremendously exciting, but it is not uncommon for even the happiest people to have episodes of depression. Even if you are moving there for a huge job promotion, to start school or to simply create a new chapter in your life, it can still be hard to be away from family and friends. You may even miss the little things like the person at your favorite café having your coffee ready every morning when you stop on your way to work.
Plan a Trip Home
Even if you just moved, there is nothing wrong with planning your first trip home. This will give you something to save a little extra out of each check for. You may even look forward to shopping for a new outfit to wear when you are back in town, or this could give you the motivation you need to drop that last 10 pounds before you go back home.
Invite a Friend
You may be surprised at how many friends might pop out for the weekend if you extend an invitation. This will give you a good reason to check out some of the hottest clubs or top recommended restaurants in the area too.
Social Media
What would the world be like without social media/ for some, it is hard to imagine life without Facebook, Twitter and other platforms, but believe it or not, humans did get along just fine. That being said, it is nice to login and see what your friends and family are up to. Just don’t let this make you miss being home even more.
Exercise
Although you are more than welcome to do your favorite workout routine on Wii or pop in a Gaiam yoga DVD, you will be better off if you get out of the house. Join a gym or purchase a few sessions at a yoga studio. Of course, you can always just go for a long walk every day, stroll through the downtown area and see what you can find, or head over to the closest park and hit the trails.
When you exercise, your body releases endorphins. These are essentially natural pain killers that make you feel good both mentally and physically. Just ask anyone who has ever experienced a runner’s high; they will tell you it is nearly impossible to feel depressed.
Volunteering
How can you feel sad when you are doing something good? There are volunteering programs available everywhere. If you love animals, there are always rescues and shelters that need help or you can help out at a homeless shelter. If nature is your passion, volunteer at the closest major park. The possibilities are really endless. These are activities that will fill a void in your life, make a positive impact and lift your spirits.
Clubs and Classes
If you have ever wanted to join a rock climbing or chess club, or take dance or cooking lessons, now is the time. This will also give you the opportunity to mingle with others with similar interests. Who knows, you may just meet someone else who just relocated too and become best friends.
