A little SoHo history

SoHo’s historic district, officially bounded by Houston Street, West Broadway, Canal Street and Crosby Street is noted for elaborate cast-iron architecture - most of its buildings dating from the late 19th century. Many of these structures originally housed warehouses and factories.
Before SoHo’s present incarnation, it was known as the Cast Iron District. The name, a blend of “South” and “Houston”, refers to “south of Houston Street”. Now a trendy locale, SoHo was formerly designated to be the site of the Lower Manhattan Expressway (Lomex). This highway would have connected the Holland Tunnel on the west, with the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges on the east. In, 1966, Mayor John V. Lindsay stressed the importance of this highway scheme as an artery to the city. The city’s historic preservation movement along with architectural critics, opposed this threat to Manhattan’s historic buildings, defeating the plans that threatened to destroy these 19th century cast-iron structures, which were fashioned primarily for manufacturing and commerce.- Artists’ studios and residences
The upper stories of many of these buildings became known as lofts, attracting many artists in the 1960’s and 1970’s, who valued these spacious areas with tall ceilings and large windows admitting natural light. As the artist population grew, the city expressed concern about possible loss of space that might be useful for future industrial purposes. Pressured on many sides, however, the city eventually gave up on the attempt to secure all of the Cast Iron District as industrial space, and in 1973 the area received official historical designation as SoHo.

- the SoHo effect
In the 1980s, the neighborhood began attracting more affluent residents, in a process known today as the “SoHo Effect”. Now, it’s become fairly commercialized. SoHo’s eclectic mix of upscale boutiques and restaurants are mainly clustered along Broadway and Prince and Spring streets, in the northern area of the neighborhood, while the southern part of the district, alongGrand Street and Canal Street, still retains much of the look and feel of SoHo’s earlier days.
